Why Compare Classic VW T4 Insurance with MultiQuoteTime?
The T4 sits awkwardly between three insurance markets. Standard van insurers treat it as a 20-plus year old commercial vehicle. Classic insurers want originality. Campervan specialists want a finished professional conversion. Most T4s fall somewhere in between, and that is where mainstream quote forms stop returning useful prices.
MultiQuoteTime routes your details to specialist brokers who understand T4 ownership. That covers factory Californias, Reimo and small-builder conversions, day vans, and self-builds whether or not the V5C has been reclassified. Compare quotes side by side to find cover that fits the van you actually own.
VW T4 Model & Conversion Guide
The T4 was built in many variants over its 13-year run, and insurers treat each one differently. Knowing exactly what you have helps get an accurate quote. Compare quotes to find brokers who cover the variant you own.
T4 California (Westfalia)
The factory campervan converted by Westfalia in Germany, with a pop-top roof, rock and roll bed and fitted kitchen as standard. Because it was built as a camper from new, insurers usually treat it under classic camper insurance terms rather than as a modified panel van, which makes agreed value cover straightforward to arrange.
T4 Caravelle
The passenger version with factory seating for up to seven. A popular base for aftermarket campervan conversions. Even if it has a full camping interior, declare it as a Caravelle on your application, not a panel van. Trim levels included CL, GL and the higher-spec Multivan.
T4 Multivan
The lifestyle-spec Caravelle, somewhere between a passenger van and a light camper. Factory equipment included a sliding rear seat that folds into a bed, a picnic table and lightweight cabinetry. Often used as a day van rather than a full camper.
T4 Transporter (Panel Van)
The commercial panel van, available in short and long wheelbase. The most common base for self-build and aftermarket conversions. If you have converted yours, declare whether the V5C has been reclassified as “motor caravan” with the DVLA, as this affects how the policy is set up.
Autosleeper, Devon & Holdsworth
UK-based professional conversions on T4 Transporter bases, produced through the 1990s and early 2000s. Specialist insurers recognise these conversions, and original conversion paperwork supports an agreed value claim. See classic camper insurance.
Reimo & Self-Build Conversions
Reimo flat-pack kits and full DIY builds can both be insured through self-conversion campervan insurance. You can get quotes whether or not the V5C has been reclassified yet, though insurers usually ask for interior photos and a basic checklist of the gas, water and electrical setup.
Engine Variants
T4 engines included the 1.9D, 2.4D, 2.5 TDI (75, 88, 102 and 151 bhp), 2.0 petrol and the 2.8 VR6 petrol. Higher-powered variants can affect the premium. If your engine has been remapped or chipped, it must be declared as a modification.
Facelift Changes (T4A & T4B)
The T4 had two main updates. Pre-1996 vans (often called T4A) are the original short-nose models. From 1996 onwards (T4B) came an interior facelift with a new dashboard and trim. The 2000 “long-nose” redesign extended the front end to fit the larger 2.5 TDI engine. Long-nose models are more sought after and often carry higher agreed values for tidy examples.
Add-Ons Worth Asking About
Most T4 policies start with core cover only. These add-ons can usually be bolted on at quote stage, depending on the broker. Tap each one to see what it does.
