Why Choose Temporary Motorhome Insurance?

An annual policy makes sense if you use your motorhome regularly. But if you only take it out two or three times a year, you are paying for months of cover you never touch. A temporary policy gives you the same protection for the exact period you need, from a single day to a few weeks, and nothing beyond it.

It also solves the borrowing problem. Being added as a named driver on the owner’s policy puts their no claims discount at risk if anything goes wrong on your watch. Taking out your own short-term cover means any claim sits against your record, not theirs, and leaves their annual policy untouched.

For new owners, a temporary policy buys you time. Drive the motorhome home from the dealership, settle in, then compare annual cover properly rather than rushing the first quote you find. Our specialist motorhome insurance comparison gives you access to the right panel for both.

How Long Can You Get Temporary Motorhome Insurance For?

You can match the cover to your trip instead of paying for a full year. A short-term policy works for anything from a single day up to 28 days, and if you need longer, cover can run for several months or up to a year. Here are the durations drivers ask for most.

Length of Cover Typical Use
1 day motorhome insurance Driving a newly bought motorhome home from the dealer, or any one-off trip.
Weekend cover (2 to 3 days) Festivals, short breaks, or sharing the driving on a long weekend.
1 week motorhome insurance Borrowing a friend’s campervan, or a full week touring without touching your annual policy.
Up to 28 days Longer holidays, or bridging cover while you sort an annual policy on a new purchase.
1 to 6 months Seasonal touring, an extended trip abroad, or cover between annual policies.

Cover from 1 to 28 days is arranged through GoShorty. For anything longer, from a month up to a full year, our specialist panel can quote instead. You pick your duration when you request a quote and we send you to the right broker.

What Does Temporary Motorhome Insurance Cover?

Short-term motorhome policies are comprehensive as standard, the highest level of cover available. That means protection for accidental damage to the motorhome, fire and theft, and damage you cause to other people or their property. If your trip takes you abroad, cover also includes the minimum level required to drive legally in the EU, provided the journey starts and finishes in the UK.

Because the policy stands on its own, a claim does not touch the owner’s annual policy or their no claims discount. That separation is the whole point of temporary cover, and it is what makes it work so well for borrowing.

Who Can Get Short-Term Cover (1 to 28 Days)?

Short-term cover from 1 to 28 days is arranged through GoShorty temporary insurance. A few conditions apply so the insurer can offer an instant quote:

Requirement Detail
Driver age Between 25 and 70 years old.
Licence A full UK driving licence.
Vehicle value Current market value up to £40,000.
Engine size Up to 3 litres.
Vehicle type A motorhome, campervan, day van or van converted with fixed living facilities such as a bed and cooker.

A standard work van with a mattress in the back does not qualify. If you need to insure an unconverted van, temporary van insurance is the right product instead.

Who Can Get Cover Over 28 Days (Policy Link)?

For cover longer than 28 days, from a few months up to a year, your enquiry is routed to our specialist panel through Policy Link. The criteria differ from the short-term route and are broader on some points, such as the upper age limit and vehicle value. So if you fall outside the short-term limits, for example you are over 70 or the motorhome is worth more than £40,000, this route may still be able to cover you.

Requirement Detail
Driver age Between 25 and 82 years old.
Licence A full licence held for at least 3 years.
Employment Must be employed.
Vehicle value Current market value up to £55,000.

Panel criteria can change, so exact eligibility is confirmed when you request a quote.

How Much Does Temporary Motorhome Insurance Cost?

Short-term motorhome cover costs vary significantly depending on the vehicle value, duration and your driving history. The best way to find an accurate price is to compare quotes from specialist brokers. These are the factors that affect what you pay.

Length of Cover

Policies of 20 days or more often attract a discounted daily rate. If you are close to that threshold it can be cheaper to extend slightly rather than stopping at 18 or 19 days. Ask the broker for the daily rate at different durations before you commit.

Value of the Motorhome

The higher the vehicle value, the higher the premium. Many temporary motorhome policies cap cover at £40,000. Some specialist providers go up to £75,000. If your motorhome is worth more, check the cap before buying.

Claims History

A clean claims record signals low risk to insurers. No-claims history built on a temporary policy does not automatically transfer to an annual policy, but a record of fault claims will follow you. Drive carefully and declare accurately.

How the Motorhome Is Stored

A locked garage or secure off-road compound reduces theft risk and can lower your quote. On-street parking is the most expensive storage option. If you have access to off-road storage, declare it when getting quotes.

Club Membership

Members of the Camping and Caravanning Club or the Caravan and Motorhome Club often qualify for a discount. Always mention your membership when getting quotes. It costs nothing to ask and can reduce the premium by 10% or more.

Miles Travelled

The fewer miles you plan to cover, the lower your premium. State your expected mileage accurately. Limited mileage policies are available for occasional users and short domestic trips.

How Long Can You Get Temporary Motorhome Insurance For?

Cover duration varies by provider but most temporary motorhome policies run from 1 hour up to 28 days as standard. Some specialist providers extend this to 6 months. If you need cover beyond 6 months, an annual policy is almost always cheaper.

Duration Type of cover Best for
1 to 7 days Fully comprehensive Driving a new purchase home, test drives, single short trips
7 to 30 days Fully comprehensive Holiday breaks, borrowing from a friend, seasonal trips
1 to 3 months Fully comprehensive Extended European touring, winter in Spain, longer borrowing periods
Up to 6 months Fully comprehensive Seasonal owners who only use the motorhome spring to autumn
Over 6 months Annual policy Annual cover is cheaper at this point. Compare annual motorhome insurance quotes instead.

Same-day cover is available on most temporary motorhome policies. If you need to drive today, you can compare quotes and have documents in your inbox within 15 minutes in most cases.

What to look for in a good temporary motorhome policy

Not all temporary motorhome policies are equal. Here’s what you should check for when comparing quotes to make sure you’re properly protected.

Audio Equipment
Look for cover for fitted audio equipment. A good policy should cover at least £400 in value as standard.
Optional
Windscreen Cover
Check whether windscreen cover is included. Ideally up to £1,000 for chips, cracks and full replacements.
Optional
European Travel
If you’re heading to Europe, check the policy includes EU cover. Look for at least 90 days as standard.
Optional
Contents Cover
Make sure your personal belongings inside the motorhome are covered. Not all policies include this automatically.
Optional
Non-Standard Contents
Got specialist equipment on board? Check whether non-standard contents are covered. Some schemes include this, others don’t.
Optional
Tailored Cover
A good broker will tailor the policy to your situation. Don’t settle for a one-size-fits-all policy if your needs are specific.
Please note: Cover levels, limits and inclusions vary between providers and policy types. The details above are indicative only. Always check your policy schedule for full terms and conditions. All providers on our panel are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Eamonn’s Take: You Don’t Need to Own One to Try Van Life

Van life is no longer a retirement purchase. Younger couples and families now make up a big share of the people taking to the road, and you only have to look at how busy #vanlife is online to see how mainstream it has become.

Most people assume joining in means buying a vehicle. It doesn’t. Hire a campervan for a fortnight, or borrow a relative’s for a weekend, and a short-term policy covers you in your own name for exactly those days. If you are borrowing, it keeps the owner’s no claims discount untouched, which matters to them more than most borrowers realise.

So my advice is to try it first. Take two or three short trips before you spend tens of thousands on a motorhome you might use twice a year. You will learn far more about whether the life suits you, and you will not be paying to insure a vehicle you are still unsure about. And if you do catch the bug, you do not have to spend big to own one, a Mazda Bongo is how a lot of people get started without breaking the bank.

Just purchased a new campervan and need cover to drive it home

If your new campervan has finally arrived at the dealership, you may need temp cover to drive it home and then finalise your actual long term cover from home, giving you time to compare the various options available.

Short term cover if you borrow from a friend or family

Short term campervan insurance provides a perfect solution if you wish to borrow a motorhome from a friend or family and at the same time protect their driving history and any no claims discount.  Unlike being added as a named driver to the owner’s motorhome insurance policy, you are taking out a policy in your name, which will have no impact on the policy of the lender.

This policy is not suitable if you are hiring out your vehicle for reward. If you are gaining a reward for lending out your vehicle, you will need a specific type of policy referred to as hire and reward. Check out our guide on hire and reward van insurance for more detailed information.

Who would be covered with a temporary motorhome insurance policy?

Any person from the age of 18 to 75 years of age can take out one of these policies. The requirements include holding a valid UK or other country’s driving licence. What should be noted is that drivers from the age of 18 to 24 will have a higher rate than older drivers.

Only the named driver in the policy will be covered under this type of policy. If the operator of the motorhome is in an accident, and they are not the named driver in the policy, the claim will not be honoured.

This type of policy is only valid for motorhomes weighing 3.5 tonnes or less.

Benefits of a temporary campervan insurance policy?

Temporary insurance has grown in popularity, with temporary van insurance and car insurance always in high demand. This is also the case with campervans and motorhomes owners that only need insurance on a temporary basis, or for those that are able to borrow a camper from a friend or a family member. Some benefits are as follows:

No Claims bonus protection – Taking out your own cover rather than be added to an existing policy will protect t the no claim’s history of the owner of the campervan.

Share The Driving :  Off on a long road campervan trip with a friend and wish to help by sharing the task of driving, take out a temporary motorhome policy, and you are ready to go.

What is included in a temporary campervan insurance policy?

Most providers of temporary campervan insurance will only provide full comprehensive cover.

The motorhome will also be covered if it is stolen or damaged by a fire that is not the fault of the driver.
This policy can only be used for social, domestic and pleasure use.  The policy will be void if the motorhome is being used for business purposes.

How to Reduce Your Temporary Motorhome Insurance Premium

The first step is using a comparison site like MultiQuoteTime to get quotes from multiple specialist brokers at once, rather than going direct to a single provider. After that, these are the steps that bring it down further.

  • Take out cover for exactly the time you need. Policies of 20 days or more often attract a discounted daily rate. If you are close to that threshold, extending slightly can be cheaper than stopping short.
  • Increase the voluntary excess. A higher excess reduces the premium. Only go as high as you can realistically afford to pay at claim stage.
  • Declare secure storage. A locked garage or CASSOA compound rather than on-street parking reduces theft risk and can lower your quote.
  • Mention your club membership. Members of the Camping and Caravanning Club or the Caravan and Motorhome Club often qualify for a discount. Always mention it when getting quotes.
  • State your mileage and destination accurately. The fewer miles you plan to cover and the lower-risk your route, the lower your premium. Accurate declarations also keep your policy valid at claim stage.
  • Book in advance where possible. Taking out a policy 30 or more days before your trip can reduce the premium with some providers.
  • Build your no-claims history. A clean claims record reduces premiums on both temporary and annual policies over time.

There are many good uses for choosing a temporary motorhome insurance comparison over annual cover. If you only use your motorhome for a few summer months, why insure for months that it will sit parked in a driveway
