European imports, American RVs and self-builds on imported chassis. LHD declared correctly from the start, not discovered at claim stage.
The LHD Tick Box Problem
Most standard quote forms don’t have a left-hand drive option. Fill one in and the quote comes back based on right-hand drive assumptions, or it comes back as a referral. You’ll end up waiting for a callback that may never come.
At claim stage, an insurer who didn’t know your vehicle was LHD has grounds to void the policy entirely. Not reduce the payout. Void it.

How Much Does Left-Hand Drive Motorhome Insurance Cost?
There is no single answer, but there is a reliable range. LHD adds 10% to 25% to the premium over an equivalent RHD motorhome. Beyond that, the biggest variable is vehicle value.
Entry-Level European Import (£30,000 to £60,000)
An older Hymer Exsis-T or Adria Matrix with a clean driving record, secure storage and limited mileage. Expect premiums in the range of £400 to £700 per year from a specialist broker. Mainstream insurers may decline or return a referral rather than a quote.
Mid-Range European Import (£60,000 to £120,000)
A Burstner Lyseo or Rapido Serie 8 in this bracket. Premiums typically run £700 to £1,200 per year. A tracker, compound storage and owners club membership can pull this down noticeably. A Thatcham Cat 5 or Cat 6 tracker is often required at this value.
Premium German Import (£120,000 to £200,000)
Hymer B-MC MasterLine, Carthago Chic C-Line, Concorde Carver territory. Premiums from £1,200 upwards. Agreed value cover is the priority here, not the headline premium. A payout based on market value rather than agreed value can leave you £20,000 to £40,000 short on a rare import.
American RV (£80,000 to £250,000+)
Winnebago, Thor, Fleetwood. The weight class, engine size and parts availability issue pushes premiums significantly higher than European equivalents at the same value. Most mainstream motorhome insurers decline American RVs outright. Specialist brokers only.
Premium ranges are indicative based on publicly available broker data and motorhome owner forums. Your actual premium will depend on your specific vehicle, driving history, storage and cover requirements. Compare quotes to find the most accurate price for your motorhome.
How to Reduce Your LHD Motorhome Insurance Premium
LHD adds a loading to your premium by default. The first step is using a comparison site like MultiQuoteTime to get quotes from multiple specialist brokers at once, rather than phoning round individually or going direct to a single insurer. After that, these are the steps that bring it down further.
- Fit an approved tracker. Thatcham Cat 5 or Cat 6 with an active subscription. Can cut the premium by 15% to 25% at higher vehicle values.
- Use CASSOA-rated compound storage. The premium saving often exceeds the annual storage cost.
- Join a recognised owners club. Some specialist brokers offer up to 15% discount for members.
- Choose limited mileage. Seasonal owners can save significantly. Bands start from 3,000 miles per year.
- Pay annually. Monthly payments add 8% to 12% in interest. Paying upfront costs nothing extra.
- Build your NCD. Five-year no claims discount reduces premiums more than any security device. Protect it once you reach four or five years.
- Increase voluntary excess. A higher excess reduces the premium. Only go as high as you can realistically afford at claim stage.
What Does LHD Motorhome Insurance Not Cover?
Every policy is different. These are the exclusions and limits that LHD owners commonly encounter — but always check the specific wording of any policy before you buy.
Windscreen Limits
Many standard policies cap windscreen cover at £500. A panoramic A-class screen on a Carthago, Concorde or Niesmann+Bischoff can cost £2,000 to £3,000 to replace, shipped from Germany. Some specialist policies offer unlimited windscreen cover. Check the limit before you sign.
European Touring Days
Standard policies may cap European cover at 90 days per year. If you spend six months in Spain over winter, that leaves three months without valid cover. Some specialist providers offer up to 365 days. Ask the broker for the exact number — “European cover included” does not tell you how many days.
Undeclared LHD Status
Some insurers may void the entire policy at claim stage if the vehicle was not declared as left-hand drive at the point of quote. This is not a theoretical risk. It can catch owners of imported vehicles where the steering side was not obvious from the V5C. Always declare LHD status explicitly.
Toll Booth and Barrier Damage
Some policies include an exclusion for damage caused by driver error at toll barriers or car park barriers. For LHD drivers in France and Spain, reaching the toll machine often means opening the door into the barrier lane. Check whether your policy covers this specifically before driving in Europe.
Undeclared Modifications
Solar panels, bike racks, satellite dishes, upgraded electrics, aftermarket cameras. Some policies may not cover damage to or caused by modifications that were not declared at quote stage. An undeclared modification can give an insurer grounds to dispute a claim on the entire vehicle, not just the modified part.
Mechanical and Electrical Breakdown
Most motorhome insurance policies do not cover mechanical or electrical breakdown as standard. This includes slide-out mechanisms on American RVs, habitation electrics and heating systems. Breakdown cover is a separate product. Check whether your policy includes it or whether you need to arrange it separately.
Real-World Example
What Actually Happens at a French Toll Booth
You pull up to the peage on the A7 near Lyon. The toll machine is on the left. You’re sitting on the left. You can’t reach it from the driver’s seat, so you open your door and lean out. The door catches the toll barrier. On a Hymer B-MC, that’s a factory-painted panel shipped from Bad Waldsee. Budget £800 to £1,500 depending on model year and paint code. Some policies cover this under accidental damage. Some include an exclusion for driver error at restricted access points. Check that specific clause before you drive through the Channel Tunnel.
What Types of Left-Hand Drive Motorhome Insurance Cover Are There?
There are two main ways a specialist policy can pay out if your LHD motorhome is written off or stolen. The difference matters most for high-value imports.
| New for Old | Market Value | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Replacement at today’s new price | Current market value at time of claim |
| Typical conditions | Vehicle usually needs to be under 2 to 3 years old. Check the exact age limit with your broker before buying. | No age restriction. Applies to most standard policies by default. |
| Best for | Newer, high-value imports where replacement cost is significantly higher than market value | Older or lower-value imports where the premium saving outweighs the payout difference |
| The LHD risk | Low. You get a like-for-like replacement regardless of what the second-hand market says. | High for rare imports. A Carthago, Concorde or Niesmann+Bischoff has very few UK comparables. The valuation may fall well short of what you paid. |
| Ask your broker | Is new for old included? What is the maximum vehicle age? Is there a mileage limit? | Can we agree a fixed value upfront instead of relying on market valuation at claim time? |
Driving a Left-Hand Drive Motorhome in the UK
Every one of these catches LHD owners out at least once. Most are cheap to fix before they happen. Some are not cheap at all after they happen. If you are new to motorhome ownership or borrowing one for a first trip, temporary motorhome insurance is also available from 1 day upwards.
Headlamp Beam Adapters Are a Legal Requirement
LHD headlamps dip to the right for continental driving. On UK roads that blinds oncoming traffic. Driving without adapters can give your insurer grounds to reject a claim. They cost £5 to £15 and take five minutes to fit. Some newer Hymers with adaptive LED headlights switch the beam pattern electronically. Check the handbook rather than assuming.
Your Speedometer May Be Showing km/h
European imports show km/h as the primary scale. The mph numbers are smaller and harder to read at a glance. Get caught doing 120 in what you thought was a 70 zone and your insurance premium reflects it for five years. A GPS speed display costs around £20 on Amazon and removes the guesswork.
Overtaking Is Riskier Than You Think
You are sitting on the left. Oncoming traffic is hidden behind the vehicle in front. Your passenger becomes your eyes, or you fit a dashcam and mirror system. On single carriageways, do not overtake unless the road ahead is completely clear for 400 metres.
You Will Drift Toward the Centre Line
Sitting on the left makes the kerb feel too close. Natural instinct pushes you toward the middle of the road. In a motorhome that is 2.35 metres wide, drifting 30cm puts your offside mirror in the path of oncoming traffic. Practise on quiet B-roads before attempting dual carriageways.
The Driver’s Door Opens Into Traffic
Every time you park on a UK street, your door opens into the road. Look twice every time. One careless exit and you are looking at a claim, a damaged door and possibly a trip to A&E.
DVLA Registration and MOT Must Be in Order
Imported vehicles need DVLA registration and a valid MOT. Your insurer needs the V5C reference number and the MOT certificate number. Driving without either can void the entire policy. Not just a claim. The policy itself.
European Speed Cameras Capture the Rear Plate
UK drivers are used to front-facing cameras. European speed cameras capture the rear plate. That fine from the A7 in France will find you eventually. It affects your driving record and, by extension, your renewal premium.
Tell Your Insurer Everything
LHD status, import origin, modifications, intended European use, annual mileage. Full disclosure at quote stage keeps the policy valid. An undeclared modification or undisclosed LHD status gives your insurer grounds to reject a claim. Not reduce it. Reject it entirely.
Which LHD Motorhome Brands Does the Panel Cover?
If your German import or American RV isn’t on this list, our panel likely has a specialist underwriter who can price it manually.
Hymer
Germany
The “Safe Bet” of the LHD world. Because they are the most imported German brand, UK underwriters are comfortable with them. Parts are easier to source than rarer makes, which keeps your premiums competitive.
Hymer Insurance →Burstner
Germany
UK buyers usually find Burstner when they want German build quality without the Hymer price tag. Insurance is straightforward on Fiat and Mercedes bases, provided you declare any optional factory “packs.”
Burstner Insurance →Dethleffs
Germany
The go-to for long-haul European touring. If you are spending months in Spain or Italy, make sure your broker actually includes extended EU cover. A standard 90-day limit is no use to a Dethleffs owner.
Carthago
Germany
The Theft Magnet. These are high-value assets (£200k+). If you don’t have a Thatcham S5 tracker and an Agreed Value certificate, don’t waste time on standard sites. You are uninsurable on the high street.
Rapido
France
Premium French engineering. While some RHD models exist, the best layouts are LHD. Insurance is generally affordable, but ensure your broker understands the specific French parts supply chain for claims.
Rapido Insurance →Pilote
France
Loyal following among fans of French design. Using Fiat Ducato across the range makes the mechanical side easy to insure. It’s the bespoke bodywork that requires a specialist broker who knows the repair costs.
Concorde
Germany
Luxury apartments on truck chassis. Values easily exceed £200,000. Market value is just a guess for most insurers. Agreed Value cover isn’t a “feature” here: it is the only way to protect your investment.
Adria
Slovenia
The affordable entry point into LHD ownership. Because they are popular and use standard Fiat bases, insurance complications are rare. A great choice if you want LHD benefits with RHD-style premiums.
Winnebago
USA
The 12-Metre Headache. Standard sites will decline you for the 6.8L V10 engine or the slide-outs alone. You need our specialist truck-based panel for this, not a car insurer.
American RV Insurance →Knaus
Germany
The go-to alternative for those who find the VW California too small. Their van conversions are gaining ground. Keep premiums low by ensuring your VW-based Knaus has a factory-fitted immobiliser.
