Why Compare Classic VW T4 Insurance with MultiQuoteTime?

The T4 sits awkwardly between three insurance markets. Standard van insurers treat it as a 20-plus year old commercial vehicle. Classic insurers want originality. Campervan specialists want a finished professional conversion. Most T4s fall somewhere in between, and that is where mainstream quote forms stop returning useful prices.

MultiQuoteTime routes your details to specialist brokers who understand T4 ownership. That covers factory Californias, Reimo and small-builder conversions, day vans, and self-builds whether or not the V5C has been reclassified. Compare quotes side by side to find cover that fits the van you actually own.

VW T4 Model & Conversion Guide

The T4 was built in many variants over its 13-year run, and insurers treat each one differently. Knowing exactly what you have helps get an accurate quote. Compare quotes to find brokers who cover the variant you own.

T4 California (Westfalia)

The factory campervan converted by Westfalia in Germany, with a pop-top roof, rock and roll bed and fitted kitchen as standard. Because it was built as a camper from new, insurers usually treat it under classic camper insurance terms rather than as a modified panel van, which makes agreed value cover straightforward to arrange.

T4 Caravelle

The passenger version with factory seating for up to seven. A popular base for aftermarket campervan conversions. Even if it has a full camping interior, declare it as a Caravelle on your application, not a panel van. Trim levels included CL, GL and the higher-spec Multivan.

T4 Multivan

The lifestyle-spec Caravelle, somewhere between a passenger van and a light camper. Factory equipment included a sliding rear seat that folds into a bed, a picnic table and lightweight cabinetry. Often used as a day van rather than a full camper.

T4 Transporter (Panel Van)

The commercial panel van, available in short and long wheelbase. The most common base for self-build and aftermarket conversions. If you have converted yours, declare whether the V5C has been reclassified as “motor caravan” with the DVLA, as this affects how the policy is set up.

Autosleeper, Devon & Holdsworth

UK-based professional conversions on T4 Transporter bases, produced through the 1990s and early 2000s. Specialist insurers recognise these conversions, and original conversion paperwork supports an agreed value claim. See classic camper insurance.

Reimo & Self-Build Conversions

Reimo flat-pack kits and full DIY builds can both be insured through self-conversion campervan insurance. You can get quotes whether or not the V5C has been reclassified yet, though insurers usually ask for interior photos and a basic checklist of the gas, water and electrical setup.

Engine Variants

T4 engines included the 1.9D, 2.4D, 2.5 TDI (75, 88, 102 and 151 bhp), 2.0 petrol and the 2.8 VR6 petrol. Higher-powered variants can affect the premium. If your engine has been remapped or chipped, it must be declared as a modification.

Facelift Changes (T4A & T4B)

The T4 had two main updates. Pre-1996 vans (often called T4A) are the original short-nose models. From 1996 onwards (T4B) came an interior facelift with a new dashboard and trim. The 2000 “long-nose” redesign extended the front end to fit the larger 2.5 TDI engine. Long-nose models are more sought after and often carry higher agreed values for tidy examples.

What to Look For When Comparing T4 Insurance

Standard insurers value classic vans by book price, which rarely reflects what a tidy T4 is actually worth. When comparing quotes, check that the policy includes the right valuation method, the cover features that matter for older vans, and any discounts for limited use or security.

1. How the T4 is Valued

  • Agreed value: The broker should agree a fixed sum with you upfront based on the van’s real condition and spec, not a generic book value.
  • Conversion documented: Original Westfalias, professional conversions and well-documented self-builds should be valued on what they would actually cost to replace.
  • Left-hand drive imports: If your T4 is an LHD European import, check the broker handles it. See left-hand drive campervan insurance.

2. What the Policy Actually Covers

  • Modifications: Check that declared modifications (suspension, wheels, bodywork, engine work) are replaced on a like-for-like basis after a claim, not reverted to factory.
  • Camping equipment: Awnings, gas bottles, generators, and other kit that isn’t fixed to the van. Check what’s included as standard and the per-item limits.
  • Interior fit-out: Audio systems, custom cabinetry, fitted electrics and water systems. Confirm whether these are included or need to be added.

3. Discounts Worth Asking About

  • Owners’ club membership: Some brokers offer a discount if you’re a member of a recognised VW T4 owners’ club.
  • Limited mileage: If you keep annual mileage under 5,000 or 7,500, a limited mileage policy can cut the premium.
  • Laid-up cover: If the van is off the road over winter, you can usually drop to fire and theft only while it’s stored.

Add-Ons Worth Asking About

Most T4 policies start with core cover only. These add-ons can usually be bolted on at quote stage, depending on the broker. Tap each one to see what it does.

Agreed Value

A fixed sum agreed between you and the insurer at the start of the policy, paid in full if the van is written off. This avoids the depreciation gap on tidy or restored T4s where book value is well below real-world value.

Photographs, conversion paperwork and a recent valuation usually support an agreed value request.

Breakdown Cover

Roadside recovery if the van breaks down. Older T4s benefit from this more than newer vans, particularly for parts-related faults that can’t be fixed roadside.

Check whether the policy covers recovery to home, a garage of your choice, or only to the nearest network garage.

European Touring

Extends UK cover to Europe, usually for a set number of days per year. Standard policies often include 30 to 90 days. Extended European cover is available as an add-on for longer trips.

Worth checking before any European trip, as driving abroad on third-party-only cover can leave you exposed.

Laid-Up Cover

Reduced cover for periods when the van is off the road, typically over winter. Covers fire and theft only while the van is stored, with a lower premium than full annual cover.

Useful for T4 owners who only use the van seasonally and store it in a garage or secure compound for several months a year.

Limited Mileage

Lower premiums in exchange for capping annual mileage, typically at 3,000, 5,000 or 7,500 miles. Suits T4 owners using the van as a second vehicle, weekend camper or seasonal tourer.

Going over the limit can affect the premium at renewal or, in some cases, a claim.

Contents Cover

Covers camping equipment, awnings, gas bottles, generators and personal effects inside the van. Some policies include a basic level of contents cover, others charge extra.

Check the per-item limit and whether items left in the van overnight are covered.

Keycare

Covers the cost of replacing lost or stolen keys, including locksmith call-out, replacement locks and onward travel if the van is left stranded.

T4 keys and locks can be expensive to replace, particularly for vans with the original chipped keys.

Legal Cover

Covers legal fees to recover uninsured losses if you have a non-fault accident, including excess, loss of earnings and personal injury claims.

Useful if your T4 is rare or has been modified, as recovering full value from a third-party insurer can take longer than standard claims.
