Types of Driving Convictions

We detail some of the most common driving convictions below, but cover is available for all types of convictions, as summarised in the list below.

Speeding Convictions

If you are caught exceeding local speed limits, and you are a first offender you will normally have 2 choices, points on your licence or attend a speed driving awareness course. It is best to avoid the speeding ticket as you will also face a hefty fine. The points on your licence must also be declared when seeking insurance, which will result in a higher premium.

With advances in technology, police are able to detect common driving offence that include speeding or even driving using a hand held device. Whilst it can detect the use of a hand held device, it can not distinguish between a driver or an occupant, but if you are the only one in the car you are in trouble. The additional surveillance technologies have resulted in a surge in drivers with points, and it is estimated that 2.6 million drivers in the UK now have points on their licence, So you are not alone in your search for affordable car insurance with points.

Drink-driving Penalties

Drink-driving will result in a DR10 driving conviction with 11 points added to your driving licence and a possible 12-month disqualification from driving. When you subsequently go in search of motoring insurance, you will be faced with higher premiums as a result. DR20 is for drug driving. Before regaining your driving licence, you must pass the DVLA CDT Test also referred to as the drink driving test examination.

Penalties for Drug-driving

For details on possible penalties for drug driving take 5 minutes to read Drug driving insurance article that covers (DG10, DG30, DR80, DR90)

Driving without Insurance

Driving without insurance conviction will result in an (IN10) motoring conviction.

Penalty points

Penalty points are endorsements on your driving licence and are awarded for various kinds of driving offences. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are 2 of the more serious convictions, but other less serious offences such as driving with faulty lights can also result in penalty points. In addition, some points will last longer than others. The duration that points will stay on your licence is determined by the severity of the offence.

Which car insurance companies do not ask about criminal convictions?

All car insurance companies will ask about your driving history in relation to previous motoring and criminal convictions. Car insurance companies provide insurance quotes based on the risk profile of the driver. Criminal convictions and motoring offences are key factors in determining risk. As such, you will be asked about prior motoring and criminal offences.  The only time that you can avoid declaring previous convictions is when that particular conviction is spent. See this link for further information on criminal convictions and rehabilitation periods.

Van Insurance for Convicted Van Drivers

The panel can give a range of quotes for convicted drivers including car, truck and insurance for convicted van drivers.

Did you know?

That not declaring your convictions will invalidate your insurance, leaving you effectively driving without insurance.

How to Cut the Cost of Convicted Driver Insurance

By using a vehicle that has a small engine and is classified as economical will place the cover for it in a group with the lowest possible premium costs.

Installing a telemetric device like a black box will provide data on you as a driver. This information if favourable can result in future discounts for safe driving.

Parking the vehicle in a secure location that is off the road. For example, a garage that has securing features such as alarms and exterior lighting will reduce risk and help towards a lower premium. Adding an immobiliser or other anti theft device again lowers risk and will be another step to lowering your annual premiums.

The higher the voluntary excess is, the lower the premium should be. You can also avoid paying interest payments by paying the premium on an annual basis.

The comparison service can help you compare the cost of convicted car and convicted van insurance. We work in partnership with Quotezone who forward your details onto specialist convicted driver insurance brokers, who in turn will provide you with a range of quotes.
