Weight and Licence Class
Class A RVs typically weigh 7 to 12 tonnes. Anything above 3.5 tonnes needs a C1 licence. Above 7.5 tonnes, you need a full C licence. Heavier vehicles attract higher premiums because recovery and repair costs are significantly greater. A standard roadside recovery can’t lift a 10-tonne motorhome onto a flatbed.
Parts Lead Time
Replacement parts for American RVs ship from the US. A windscreen for a Fleetwood Discovery takes 3 to 6 weeks to arrive. During that time, you may need a courtesy vehicle or alternative accommodation. Insurers price this delay into the premium.
Slide-Out Mechanisms
Most American RVs have at least one slide-out, many have three or four. Repair costs run from £5,000 to £12,000 per slide-out. Not every policy covers them. If yours does, the premium reflects that risk.
Storage and Security

How to Reduce Your American RV Insurance Premium
American RV premiums are higher than standard motorhome cover, but you’re not stuck with the first quote. These steps bring the price down without cutting the cover you actually need.
- Fit a Thatcham-approved tracker. On a vehicle worth £100,000 or more, some brokers require one anyway. Fitting it proactively can reduce your premium and speeds up recovery if the RV is stolen.
- Store in a CASSOA-approved compound. American RVs are too large for most domestic garages. A Gold-rated CASSOA site with CCTV, perimeter fencing and 24-hour access control tells your insurer the theft risk is low.
- Limit your annual mileage. Most American RVs do fewer than 5,000 miles a year. Declaring a realistic low mileage brings the premium down. Don’t understate it though, an inaccurate declaration can void your policy at claim stage.
- Pay the annual premium in one go. Monthly instalments add interest, sometimes 15 to 20% over the year. On a high-value RV policy, that’s a significant chunk of money.
- Increase the voluntary excess. A higher excess lowers the premium. On a £150,000 RV, setting a £500 voluntary excess rather than £250 can make a noticeable difference. Only go as high as you can afford at claim stage.
- Join the Caravan and Motorhome Club. Membership qualifies you for discounts with several specialist brokers. Always mention it when getting quotes.

What Affects the Cost of American RV Insurance?
American RV insurance is priced differently from standard motorhome cover. These are the factors that matter most.
The Slide-Out Problem
Most American RVs have slide-outs that extend the living space by up to a metre on each side. The hydraulic and electric mechanisms that power them cost £5,000 to £12,000 to repair. Standard motorhome policies were never designed for this. If your policy doesn’t name slide-out cover as included, assume it’s excluded. Ask before you sign.
Left-Hand Drive Configuration
Every American RV is left-hand drive. That means restricted visibility on UK roads, difficulty at toll booths and drive-throughs, and a statistically higher accident rate on right-hand-traffic roads. Insurers add a loading for LHD. There’s no way around it, but specialist brokers price it more accurately than generalists who just add a blanket surcharge.
C1 or C Licence Requirement
Class A American RVs typically weigh 7 to 12 tonnes. You need a C1 licence for anything between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, and a full C licence above that. If you passed your driving test before January 1997, you have C1 automatically. If you didn’t, you’ll need to pass a medical and a separate driving test. Driving without the correct licence invalidates your insurance completely.
US Parts and Repair Times
A cracked windscreen on a Winnebago Adventurer ships from the US factory. That’s 3 to 6 weeks, not 3 to 6 days. During that time you’re paying for storage, possibly a courtesy vehicle, and the repair bill itself. Insurers who cover American RVs regularly know this timeline and price it in. Generalists either refuse or overcharge because they can’t predict the cost.
The 110V Electrical System
American RVs run on 110V, not the UK’s 240V. A professional conversion or step-down transformer is needed for UK campsite hook-ups. If the conversion hasn’t been done properly, or if a fault in the 110V system causes a fire, your claim could be rejected. Declare the electrical setup accurately when you get quotes.
Width and Road Restrictions
American RVs often exceed 2.55 metres in width, which is the UK legal maximum for unrestricted road use. That affects where you can drive, where you can park, and which campsites will accept you. Some insurers restrict cover on certain road classes for oversized vehicles. Check your policy wording.
I’ve seen American RV owners get caught out by slide-outs more than anything else. One owner had a Fleetwood Bounder with three slide-outs. The rear mechanism failed mid-trip in Cornwall, jammed half-extended. Recovery alone cost £1,800 because you can’t tow a 10-tonne RV with a slide hanging out. The repair came to £7,200. His policy excluded mechanical failure of slide-out mechanisms entirely. He had no idea until he made the claim. What Does American RV Insurance Not Cover?
Every policy has exclusions. On an American RV, the exclusions matter more because the repair costs are so much higher. These are the gaps that catch owners out.
Slide-Out Mechanical Failure
This is the big one. Many policies cover the slide-out structure if it’s damaged in an accident, but exclude mechanical or electrical failure of the slide-out motor, hydraulic rams or control unit. If your slide jams, seizes or fails to retract, you could be looking at £5,000 to £12,000 out of pocket. Check the policy wording for “mechanical breakdown” and “slide-out mechanism” before you buy.
Driving Without the Correct Licence
If your RV exceeds 3.5 tonnes and you don’t hold a C1 licence (or C above 7.5 tonnes), your insurer can void the policy entirely. Not just reject the claim. Void it. That means no cover at all, from the date you started driving without the right licence. If you passed your test after January 1997, check your licence categories before you buy the RV, not after.
Windscreen Limits
Standard motorhome policies cap windscreen cover at £500 to £1,000. The panoramic windscreen on a Class A Winnebago or Thor costs significantly more to replace, and the glass ships from the US. If your policy has a glass cap, you’ll pay the difference yourself. Ask your broker about windscreen cover limits before you sign.
European Touring Day Limits
Most UK motorhome policies include European cover, but limit it to 60 or 90 days per year. Some American RV owners spend entire winters in Spain or Portugal. If you exceed the day limit, your cover stops. Extended European cover is available from specialist brokers, but you need to ask for it upfront.
Undeclared 110V Electrical Modifications
If the 110V to 240V conversion wasn’t done to a professional standard, or if you’ve made electrical modifications yourself, your insurer can reject a fire or electrical damage claim. Declare every modification. Keep the conversion certificate. If you can’t prove the work was done professionally, the insurer has grounds to refuse.

Standard recovery can’t move it because the slide extends past the vehicle width. Specialist heavy recovery is called out at £1,800. The slide-out hydraulic ram needs replacing: £7,200 including parts shipped from the US and 4 weeks’ wait time.
Total bill: £9,000. If the policy excludes slide-out mechanical failure, the owner pays every penny. If the policy includes it, the excess applies and the insurer covers the rest. That one line in the policy wording is worth checking before you leave the driveway.
What Types of American RV Insurance Are There?
Three cover levels exist, same as any UK motor policy. But on an American RV worth £100,000 or more, the difference between them is not just theoretical. It’s the difference between losing £100,000 and losing your excess.
Third Party Only (TPO)
The legal minimum. Covers damage you cause to other people and their property. Covers nothing on your own RV. If a Winnebago Vista worth £85,000 is written off and you’re at fault, you lose the lot. TPO on an American RV is a gamble that makes no financial sense unless the vehicle has almost no residual value.
Third Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT)
Adds fire damage and theft cover to TPO. Better, but still leaves you exposed. If you reverse into a height barrier and cause £15,000 of roof damage, TPFT won’t pay. On a vehicle this expensive with parts this hard to source, the gap between TPFT and fully comprehensive is where most of the risk sits.
Fully Comprehensive
Covers damage to your own vehicle as well as third party. This is the only level that makes sense for most American RV owners. On a £150,000 Tiffin Phaeton, the annual difference between TPFT and comprehensive is a fraction of what a single uninsured repair would cost.
