GET MULTIPLE QUOTES →Van insurance groups explained
Lots of things shape your van insurance premium, and no single policy fits everyone. Vans come in all shapes and sizes, the way we use them varies hugely, and no two drivers are the same. One of the biggest factors is your van insurance group, which is why knowing your van’s group is a useful place to start.
Every van model sits in one of the insurance groups, based on things like its size and power. As a rule, the lower the group, the cheaper the premium. Pick your van make below to jump straight to its group information.
What are van insurance groups?
Every van is given a group rating that helps insurers judge how much of a risk it is to cover. The system is administered by Thatcham Research on behalf of the Association of British Insurers (ABI), whose Group Rating Panel sets the official ratings.
Van groups run on a 1 to 50 scale, but they are split by registration date. Vans registered before 2016 fall into groups 1 to 20, while vans registered from 2016 onwards are rated from 21 to 50. In both cases the lower the group, the cheaper the van tends to be to insure, so a van near group 1 or group 21 usually carries a lower premium than one near the top of its scale.
Four things tend to carry the most weight when a van is placed in a group:
Size and weight
Bigger, heavier vans usually sit in higher groups. They are harder to drive and cause more damage in an accident, so insurers treat them as a greater risk.
Value
A more expensive van tends to land in a higher group, because any claim after an accident or theft is likely to cost the insurer more to settle.
Cost of parts and repairs
Even a cheaper van can sit in a high group if its parts are hard to source or costly to fit, since that pushes up the price of any repair claim.
Performance
Faster vans with more powerful engines are statistically more likely to be in an accident, so they typically fall into higher insurance groups.
Heads-up: the system is changing in 2026
The long-running Group Rating system is being replaced by a new Vehicle Risk Rating (VRR) system from Thatcham Research. VRR scores each vehicle across five areas: performance, damageability, repairability, safety and security. It was introduced for cars in 2024 and is being rolled out for vans in 2026, so over time you may see a VRR score quoted instead of, or alongside, a traditional insurance group.
What do the letters after a van insurance group mean?
You will often see a letter after the group number, for example 23E or 31A. This is the security suffix set by Thatcham Research. It shows how the van’s security compares to what is expected for a van of that type, and it can nudge the group up or down. When two similar vans share the same group number, the one with an E suffix is usually the cheaper to insure.
Exceeds
Security is better than expected for its type, so the van is moved down a group. The best suffix to see.
Acceptable
Security meets the standard for its type, so there is no adjustment to the group.
Doesn’t meet
Security falls short of the standard, so the van is moved up a group, making it dearer to insure.
Provisional
The van has not been fully rated yet, usually because it is a new model. The rating is updated later.
Unacceptable
Security does not meet the required standard, which pushes the van into a higher group.
Grey import
The van was imported and has not been tested by Thatcham, so the insurer prices it at their own discretion.
The takeaway: if you are choosing between similar vans, an E suffix points to stronger standard security and often a lower premium, while D or U suggest the opposite. Fitting Thatcham-approved security such as an alarm, immobiliser or tracker can also help reduce the risk an insurer prices for.
Where you will see the letter
You will not see these letters in the model group ranges in the tables on this page, because a single model spans several groups across its variants. You will see the suffix when you check your exact van by registration or look at an individual quote. To confirm your van’s precise make, model, engine and year, you can use the free GOV.UK vehicle enquiry service, then match those details to its group. Note that the GOV.UK service shows tax and MOT details rather than the insurance group itself.
The van insurance groups
The van insurance groups are subdivisions that vans are placed into so the insurance industry can accurately determine the risk each van imposes on their business. Before January 2016 there were 20 different groupings from 1 to 20 as set by the Association of British Insurers (ABI). After that point, this group reviewed their classification and subdivided all vans into 30 different groups, listed as 21 to 50.
With very little difference between the two lists, for simplistic reasons the old grouping will be explained which are listed from the lowest risk, 1 to the highest risk 20.
Cheapest vans to insure by size
As a rule, the lower the insurance group, the cheaper the van is to insure. Below are some of the lowest-group vans in each size class, based on the make tables further down this page. Use them as a starting point if keeping insurance costs down is a priority.
Micro & car-derived
- Fiat Fiorino25 to 30
- Toyota Corolla Commercial27
Small vans
- Peugeot Partner23 to 36
- VW Caddy C2024 to 34
- Citroen Berlingo25 to 37
Medium vans
- Renault Trafic25 to 44
- VW Transporter25 to 43
- Citroen Dispatch29 to 42
Large vans
- Ford Transit23 to 47
- Fiat Ducato29 to 47
- Citroen Relay31 to 49
Pickups
- Ford Ranger33 to 42
- Nissan Navara33 to 46
- Toyota Hilux40 to 49
Remember that the insurance group is only the starting point. Your premium also depends on your age, driving history, postcode, mileage and how you use the van. A driver under 25 or with points may pay more even on a low-group van, so it is worth comparing cover for any driver over 25 van insurance or van insurance for convicted drivers if either applies to you.
About these group figures
The groups below are indicative and vary by exact variant, engine, trim and registration year. They are shown on the current 21 to 50 scale for vans registered from 2016 onwards, where group 21 is the cheapest to insure. Vans registered before 2016 use the older 1 to 20 scale. Figures are sourced from Direct Line for Business, with Toyota figures from Toyota’s own commercial ratings, all checked in May 2026. Always check your V5C or get a quote for your specific van to confirm its group.
