Rooster is a tech-led insurer that prices car insurance based on how you actually drive, tracked through a mobile app, rather than traditional factors like age or occupation. It’s a genuinely different model to most UK insurers, and one worth understanding before you decide if it’s right for you.
Rooster claims safe drivers can save up to 40% by cutting out the “crude demographics” traditional insurers use to set prices. If your driving profile comes back as high-risk, Rooster will decline to insure you rather than charge a high premium, which is the trade-off for the model.
Whether that’s a better fit than a traditional panel-based policy depends on your driving habits and how comfortable you are with app-based tracking. Compare quotes from a panel of specialist UK car insurance providers we have access to and weigh Rooster’s approach against the alternatives.
How Does Rooster Car Insurance Work?
Four steps from download to driving on cover
Download the app
Take a photo of your driving licence or enter your details manually. No lengthy forms.
Complete the test drive
Drive normally with your phone in the car for 3–4 weeks. Sensors and AI assess your driving behaviour throughout. Test drives remain valid for 18 months.
Get your personalised quote
Safe drivers receive a quote based on their actual driving, valid for 60 days. If your profile reflects higher risk, Rooster may decline to offer cover.
Customise and pay in-app
Adjust your comprehensive cover and complete payment directly through the Rooster app.
Who Is Eligible for Rooster Car Insurance?
Rooster’s published eligibility for annual insurance customers, per their own app listing:
Age
18 to 85 years old.
Licence
Full mainland UK licence held for over 12 months. Northern Ireland licences not currently accepted.
Vehicle age
Under 20 years old, not imported.
Vehicle value
Under £70,000.
Claims history

If you don’t meet Rooster’s criteria, compare young driver car insurance or new driver car insurance options from our panel instead.

Ways to Save on Car Insurance
- Improve your credit score: check it regularly and clear debt where you can, this can make you a more attractive customer to insurers and lower your premium.
- Compare quotes from different insurers: some brokers specialise in specific risk profiles, including high risk driver car insurance, and may offer better rates than a generalist.
- Keep your mileage low: less time on the road means less risk in an insurer’s eyes, which can bring your premium down. Not sure what counts as low? Check our average miles per year calculator to see how your mileage compares.
- Pay annually rather than monthly: monthly instalments usually include interest, so paying upfront is typically cheaper overall.
- Consider a higher voluntary excess: confident, careful drivers who rarely claim can lower their premium this way.
- Check your car’s insurance group: switching to a car in a lower group can meaningfully reduce your premium.
- Use telematics where it suits you: safe drivers can be rewarded with discounts through black box or app-based policies, Rooster included.

Rooster Car Insurance Reviews
Ratings correct as of publication and may have changed, check Trustpilot and the app stores directly for the current figures.
Most negative reviews centre on being declined cover after completing the test drive, which typically reflects the driving-risk assessment rather than a service issue. Positive reviews consistently mention responsive customer support during claims and policy changes.
