How Does an MS90 Conviction Affect Your Insurance Cost?
An MS90 conviction adds 6 penalty points to your licence. As a general guide, 3 penalty points typically increase premiums by 5% to 25%. With 6 points from an MS90 expect that to duble with an increase between 25% and 90% depending on your age, vehicle, postcode and other factors.

| Driver profile | Without MS90 | With MS90 | Typical uplift |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average driver (25–50, standard car) | £400 – £600 / yr | £550 – £950+ / yr | 25–60%+ |
| Young driver (17–24) | £900 – £1,800 / yr | £1,400 – £2,800+ / yr | 40–90%+ |
| Older driver (50+, modest car) | £300 – £500 / yr | £400 – £750+ / yr | 25–50%+ |
* These figures are indicative ranges based on market data and intended as a general guide only. Your actual premium will depend on your individual circumstances, insurer, age, vehicle, and driving history. Figures should not be taken as a guarantee of the increase you will face.
The good news is that the impact reduces progressively as the conviction ages. Most drivers see costs approaching normal market rates as the MS90 nears the end of its 4 year licence period and disappearing entirely once the 5 year declaration period expires. This makes it especially important to compare quotes at every renewal rather than simply accepting your existing insurer’s renewal price.

What is an MS90 Conviction?
An MS90 is the DVLA conviction code given to the registered keeper of a vehicle who fails to provide information to identify who was driving at the time an offence was committed. It carries 6 penalty points and remains on your driving licence for 4 years from the date of the offence.
| Code | Offence | Penalty points | Stays on licence | Declare to insurer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS90 | Failure to give information as to identity of driver | 6 | 4 years | 5 years |
As the registered keeper of the vehicle you are legally obliged to tell the police who was driving at the time of an alleged offence when asked to do so. Failure to respond will result in an MS90 conviction.
How Does an MS90 Conviction Happen?
Common real world examples
- Your car is caught by a speed camera. Police write to you as registered keeper asking who was driving. You do not respond and you receive an MS90.
- A family member was driving your car when an offence occurred. Some registered keepers refuse to name the driver to protect them from points. This results in an MS90 and is treated seriously by the courts.
- The police notice went to an old address and you never received it. The deadline passed and an MS90 was issued automatically.
Insurance for MS90 Convictions
If you are the registered keeper of a vehicle, you will get an MS90 conviction if you fail to provide details about the driver of the vehicle at the time when the cause of the offence happened. This is a serious conviction, and you will find it difficult to get car insurance in the future, unlike getting car insurance with points which whilst more expensive is widely available
Can You Get Insured With an MS90 Conviction?
Yes — you can get insured with an MS90 conviction through a specialist convicted driver broker
Mainstream insurers may decline or charge significantly higher premiums. Specialist brokers work with insurers experienced in covering MS90 convictions and can find you competitive cover.
If you have a driving offence like MS90 on your UK driving licence, it can be difficult to find affordable car insurance. Some insurers may refuse to cover you altogether, and others may charge much higher premiums than they would if you had no convictions.

Compare MS90 Insurance Quotes →Is an MS90 a Serious Offence?
Yes — an MS90 is a serious motoring offence that can carry harsher penalties than the original offence that triggered it
An MS90 conviction results in 6 penalty points and a fine of up to £1,000. In many cases the penalty for failing to provide driver details is more severe than the original offence itself.
Whilst an MS90 is a motoring endorsement and not a criminal conviction, courts treat it seriously. Deliberately refusing to name a driver is viewed as an attempt to obstruct justice. If false information is provided, the charge can escalate to perverting the course of justice, which carries the possibility of a custodial sentence. Even where the failure to respond was accidental, the consequences are significant and will affect your ability to find affordable car insurance for up to 5 years.
How Does an MS90 Conviction Affect My Insurance?
An MS90 conviction will increase your car insurance premium. When you apply for or renew a policy, insurers will take into account the penalty points on your licence over the last three years as well as the conviction itself. Because an MS90 signals to insurers that a driver may have been attempting to conceal a more serious offence, it is often treated more harshly than a straightforward points conviction.
| Factor | Impact |
|---|---|
| Penalty points (6) | Immediate premium increase — more points means higher perceived risk |
| Conviction type | MS90 viewed seriously by insurers — some mainstream insurers may decline |
| Time since offence | Premium impact reduces progressively each year as conviction ages |
| Additional convictions | Any other points or convictions on your licence will compound the increase |
| Declaration period | Must be declared to insurers for 5 years even after it leaves your licence |
* Always declare an MS90 conviction when applying for or renewing car insurance. Failure to do so invalidates your policy.

Compare MS90 Insurance Quotes →Is an MS90 a Criminal Conviction?
No — an MS90 is not a criminal conviction. It is a motoring endorsement recorded on your DVLA licence
An MS90 will not appear on a standard DBS check and will not affect a criminal record. It will however appear on your driving licence record and must be declared to insurers.
Whilst an MS90 is a serious motoring offence it remains a driving endorsement, not a criminal conviction. It carries 6 penalty points and a fine of up to £1,000 but does not result in a criminal record. However it is important to note that deliberately providing false information to identify a driver is a separate matter entirely and can escalate to a charge of perverting the course of justice, which is a criminal offence and carries the possibility of a custodial sentence.
How Long Does an MS90 Stay on Your Licence?
An MS90 conviction stays on your driving licence for 4 years from the date of the offence
This is confirmed by GOV.UK. Most insurance providers will ask about convictions in the last 5 years when you apply for a quote, so you should expect to declare it for up to 5 years.
During the 4 years the MS90 is on your licence you must declare it to any insurance provider when applying for or renewing a policy. The premium impact reduces progressively each year as the conviction ages. Most drivers see costs approaching normal market rates again as the conviction nears the end of the 4 year period and disappearing entirely once the 5 year declaration period expires.
