Under 3,500kg (PLGV)

Taxed as Private Light Goods (TC11). Rate depends on engine size — above or below 1549cc — and registration date.

Over 3,500kg (PHGV)

Taxed as Private Heavy Goods (TC10). Flat rate of £171/year regardless of engine size or registration date.

Historic Vehicles

Motorhomes manufactured over 40 years ago may be exempt from VED. You must apply to the DVLA for exemption.

£40,000+ List Price

PLGV motorhomes with a new list price over £40,000 may attract an additional £425/year for 5 years from the second year.

How to Pay Road Tax on a Motorhome

Once you know your motorhome’s tax band — use the calculator above to find out — paying your Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is straightforward. Here’s what you need to know.

01

Get your documents ready

You’ll need either your V11 reminder letter from the DVLA or the 11-digit reference number from your V5C logbook. Make sure your motorhome insurance and MOT (if required) are both current before you start.

02

Choose how to pay

You can pay online at gov.uk, by phone, or in person at a Post Office. Online is quickest — your tax is usually active within the hour. The Post Office requires the physical V5C or V11 document.

03

Pick your payment period

Choose 12 months upfront, 6 months upfront, or spread the cost with monthly Direct Debit. Monthly DD costs slightly more overall but can help with cash flow — particularly useful for full-timers and frequent tourers.

Ways to pay motorhome road tax

  • Online at gov.uk/vehicle-tax — available 24/7, fastest option, card payment accepted
  • Post Office — any branch displaying the DVLA logo, requires V11 or V5C in person
  • Phone — call 0300 123 4321, available 7 days a week
  • Direct Debit — set up online or by phone for monthly or 6-monthly payments
Motorhome weight matters. The rate you pay depends on whether your motorhome is under or over 3,500kg revenue weight (from your V5C). Getting this wrong means you could be paying the wrong rate. Use the calculator above to confirm your band before paying.
