Need help Navigating the UK Driving Instructor Insurance companies

The landscape for Driving Instructor Insurance has changed significantly over the last few years. Many well-known specialist brokers, such as Waveney and Master Cover, have been acquired or integrated into larger insurance groups.

For an ADI or PDI, this makes finding the right “Dual Control” cover feel like a moving target. Whether you are looking for a renewal of a legacy policy or searching for a new specialist provider, this guide clarifies the current market leaders and helps you compare the best alternatives in 2026.

Why Use a Specialist Broker?

Standard car insurance simply does not provide the correct level of cover for driving instructors. This is a niche insurance product in demand and the number of providers has changed over recent years with some favourites being bought over by the larger insurance companies so choice has become limited. We aim to be the go-to option to find the latest list of companies that specialise in providing this style of insurance.

For an ADI or PDI, this makes finding the right “Dual Control” cover feel like a moving target. Whether you are looking for a renewal of a legacy policy or searching for a new specialist provider, this guide clarifies the current market leaders and helps you compare the best alternatives in 2026.

What to Ask Every Broker Before You Buy

The policy name means very little. What matters is what is actually covered. Here are the questions worth asking before you commit.

Is the replacement vehicle dual control?

This is mega important a standard courtesy car is no use to a working instructor. Ask specifically whether the replacement is a dual control vehicle.

Does any driver cover include under 25s?

Most policies cover any driver for tuition purposes. Check whether family members under 25 can drive the car for social use.

Is negligent tuition cover included?

If a pupil causes an accident while following your instruction, are you covered?.

What are the cancellation charges?

Some brokers have significant mid-term cancellation fees. Check the schedule of charges before you sign, particularly if it is a new venture that you may decide not to pursue

Does the policy cover negligent tuition on a pupil’s car?

Some instructors also teach in the pupil’s own vehicle. As not all providers offer this cover tou weiil to check if the cover provided extends to cover the learners car.

Is off-road tuition covered?

If you teach young drivers off road, check whether your policy covers this. Some brokers offer it as standard, others charge extra or exclude it entirely.

Eamonn’s Take: Navigating the ADI Broker Market

Eamonn Turley · Commercial Insurance Editor, MultiQuoteTime

The driving instructor insurance market has undergone a significant transformation recently. Many “household names” have moved under new branding; notably, Waveney and Towergate have officially transitioned to the Everywhen brand as of early 2026. Similarly, Mastercover is now part of the Alan Boswell Group.

My primary advice for instructors is to look beyond the headline premium and focus on “Dual Control” replacement car terms. A standard courtesy car is not fit for purpose for an ADI; you need a broker who guarantees a dual-control vehicle even in ‘at-fault’ or fire and theft claims. This is the difference between keeping your business running and losing weeks of tuition income.

The bottom line: The specialist landscape is still competitive, but don’t just renew with a legacy brand out of habit. Compare the current specialist panel annually to ensure your school is benefiting from the latest dual-control protections and market-leading claims support.
