LV, formerly Liverpool Victoria, sell van insurance directly for personal and business use. European cover is included as standard, and breakdown can be added through Britannia Rescue, their own recovery operation, at five levels running from roadside assistance up to UK and European cover.
Business use covers travelling between sites, carrying your own tools and running business errands. It does not cover carrying goods for delivery, so couriers and anyone moving third party goods for payment need cover written on a hire and reward basis instead.
Two exclusions worth knowing. Tools, goods and stock carried in the van are not covered by the van policy itself and need separate cover. And LV do not insure campervans, motorhomes or heavily modified vehicles under their van product, so a converted van is a different conversation.

Why More UK Drivers Are Choosing Vans for Personal Use
A van is no longer only a work vehicle. More UK drivers are now buying one as their main everyday car, drawn by the higher driving position, the flat load space and an interior that can be adapted to suit how they actually live. For a lot of households a van does the job an estate or a large SUV used to do, and does it with more room.
The complication is insurance. Standard commercial van policies are priced and rated around business use, which is not what these drivers need. Cover rated for social, domestic and pleasure use plus commuting is a separate proposition, and quotes for it can be compared below. If the upfront cost is the sticking point rather than the annual premium, no deposit van insurance spreads the payments evenly across twelve months instead of front loading the first one.
Outdoor Enthusiasts
Bikes, boards, climbing kit and camping gear all go in without a roof rack or a tow bar. A van also doubles as somewhere dry to change at the end of a wet day out.
Dog Owners
Full size crates fit properly rather than being wedged into a boot, and the load area can be lined and washed down. Useful if you show, work or foster dogs rather than carry one.
Accessibility Needs
A flat floor and a tall rear opening make loading equipment far easier, and the interior can be reconfigured as needs change rather than being fixed by the manufacturer’s seat layout.
Weekend Movers
Owning outright removes the repeat cost of hire van rental for furniture runs, house moves and tip trips, which adds up quickly if you are doing it several times a year.
If the van is genuinely not being used for business, the use class on the policy matters more than almost anything else on the quote. Declare it accurately at the outset, because a policy rated for social and domestic use will not respond to a claim arising from work you did not disclose.
What Is LV Temporary Car Insurance and How Does It Work?
LV provides short-term insurance that is fully comprehensive to cover drivers that for example need to borrow a car or adding another driver for a limited period. It’s separate from any existing annual policy and can be activated quickly.
Vans Bought for Conversion or Imported from Overseas
A large share of personal use vans are not bought to stay as they are. They are bought as a base for a camper build, or imported because nothing sold new in the UK does the same job. Both routes change how the vehicle is rated, and both are worth understanding before you fill in a quote form rather than after.
Mainstream UK Conversion Bases
The Volkswagen Transporter, Ford Transit Custom, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Fiat Ducato, Renault Master and Vauxhall Vivaro account for most UK camper builds. While the van is still an empty shell it remains a van for insurance purposes, and a standard policy is correct.
That changes once fixed cooking facilities, a water supply and a fixed bed go in. At that point the DVLA body type becomes motor caravan, and the vehicle needs specialist motorhome insurance rather than van cover. Mid build, ask specifically about conversion in progress cover, which protects the base vehicle against fire, theft and accidental damage while the interior work is being finished.
Japanese Imports
Japanese vehicles were never sold new here, so they carry no ABI code and no UK claims history behind the model. Automated systems either decline them outright or misread them as a generic MPV, which is why quotes come back either blank or wildly out. Manual underwriting by a broker who prices these daily is the practical answer.
The common ones each have their own page: Toyota Alphard campervan insurance, Nissan Elgrand insurance, Toyota Estima insurance and Mazda Bongo insurance.
High Value and Luxury Builds
A professional conversion can carry more value in the fit out than in the van underneath it. Pop top roofs, rock and roll beds, lithium leisure batteries and fitted kitchens are rarely reflected in a market value settlement, and a standard van policy generally excludes fitted furniture and living area electrics entirely.
Agreed value is the term to ask for. It fixes the sum at the point the policy starts rather than leaving it to an algorithm at claim stage, which matters when there are few comparable vehicles on the UK market to price against. Keep receipts, build photos and a completion certificate, because that evidence is what supports the figure.
If your van is still an empty panel van used for social, domestic and pleasure purposes, a standard van policy is the right product and quotes can be compared below. If any of the three cases above applies, start on the relevant specialist page instead so the vehicle is rated correctly from the outset.
