MultiQuoteTime connects you with specialist brokers who understand the Mercedes range inside out.

  • Atego rigids from 6.5 tonnes through to 44 tonne Actros tractor units, rated on the actual vehicle rather than a generic weight band
  • Arocs tippers, mixers and hooklift conversions, where the body is often worth more than the chassis it sits on
  • Operators carrying goods for payment, where hire and reward insurance is the correct use class rather than own goods
  • Electric eActros units, where battery valuation and charging infrastructure sit outside most standard underwriting models

Why Compare Mercedes Truck Insurance at MultiQuoteTime?

Try getting a quote for an Arocs 8×4 tipper through a mainstream commercial motor form. You will pick a weight band, pick “construction” from a dropdown, and receive a number that has nothing to do with the tipping body, the site work, or the fact the vehicle spends half its life off the public highway.

Mercedes is a difficult brand to rate generically because the badge spans genuinely different risks. An Atego on a supermarket urban delivery round and an Actros running nightly trunk routes into a hub-and-spoke depot share a manufacturer and almost nothing else. Underwriters who only see the make and the gross weight tend to price for the worst case in the band, which is why owner-operators so often find their renewal quote bears no relation to their claims record.

Through MultiQuoteTime you have access to specialist brokers who work with underwriters who rate on the operation rather than the badge. That matters most on conversions, mixed fleets and electric units, where the standard forms have no field for what you actually run. It is worth seeing what the wider market offers before you commit, so it can help to compare HGV insurance across the sector rather than renewing on autopilot.

Mercedes Truck Models We Can Help You Insure

Mercedes Atego

6.5 to 16 Tonne — Distribution Workhorse

  • The core UK distribution rigid, common on parcel networks, brewery deliveries and supermarket urban rounds
  • Available as box, curtainsider, dropside and tail-lift conversions across the weight range
  • Requires a C1 licence up to 7,500kg and a full Category C licence above that
  • Widely used by hire fleets, which means plenty of used stock and a well-understood rating profile

Mercedes Econic

18 to 32 Tonne — Low-Entry Urban

  • Low-entry cab with panoramic glazing, designed for high-visibility urban work
  • Dominant in refuse collection, and increasingly specified for city centre construction logistics
  • Meets Direct Vision Standard requirements that affect operators running into London
  • Stop-start kerbside duty cycles produce a distinctive claims pattern that specialist underwriters price properly

Mercedes Arocs

18 to 41 Tonne — Construction and Tipper

  • Built for construction, aggregate haulage and site work, including 6×4 and 8×4 configurations
  • Commonly fitted with tipping bodies, concrete mixers, hooklifts and grab cranes
  • Off-road and site use rates very differently to highway work and must be declared accurately
  • Full Category C or C+E licence required depending on configuration and trailer use

Mercedes Actros

18 to 44 Tonne — Long-Haul Flagship

  • The long-haul tractor unit, running trunk routes, refrigerated distribution and continental work
  • Available as rigid and tractor, with the Actros L specified for extended-distance operations
  • MirrorCam and active safety systems are factored into some underwriters’ rating models
  • Operators comparing the wider market can review commercial truck insurance companies before renewing

Mercedes eActros

Electric — Zero Emission Distribution and Haulage

  • Battery electric range covering urban distribution through to longer-distance work
  • Battery pack represents a substantial share of total vehicle value, which changes the claims maths
  • Depot charging equipment is often insured separately rather than under the motor policy
  • A smaller pool of underwriters quote on electric HGVs, so comparison matters more here than on diesel

Legacy Mercedes Models

Axor, Antos and Earlier Actros

  • Plenty of Axor and Antos units remain in daily UK service despite being out of production
  • Earlier Actros generations are common in owner-operator and small haulage fleets
  • Older vehicles are usually written on a market value basis rather than an agreed value
  • Parts availability and repair cost both feed into how an underwriter rates an ageing chassis

Common Operational Uses for Mercedes Trucks in the UK

Mercedes Actros tractor units run the bulk of the brand’s UK trunk work, pulling refrigerated and general haulage trailers into hub-and-spoke depots on overnight schedules, with a proportion on continental routes. Arocs chassis sit almost entirely in construction, working as tippers on aggregate contracts, concrete mixers on ready-mix fleets, and hooklift units on muckaway and skip operations. The Atego covers the distribution middle ground, from brewery drays and parcel network rounds to tail-lift retail deliveries in town centres. Econic low-entry chassis dominate municipal refuse collection and increasingly appear on urban construction logistics contracts subject to Direct Vision Standard requirements. Each of those applications carries a different claims frequency and a different repair profile, and declaring the real operational use at quote stage is one of the biggest factors in getting cover that genuinely fits.

How Much Does Mercedes Truck Insurance Cost?

There is no single figure for a brand that spans a 6.5 tonne Atego and a 44 tonne Actros. Premiums are built from the vehicle, the driver and the work it does. These are the twelve factors that move the number most.

Rating Factor How It Affects Your Premium
Vehicle Weight Class The single biggest driver. An Atego at 7.5 tonnes and an Actros at 44 tonnes sit in different underwriting categories entirely, with different third party damage exposure.
Vehicle Age and Value Newer units cost more to repair but often carry safety systems that offset it. Older Axor and Antos models are typically written on market value rather than agreed value.
Driver Age and Experience Years held on Category C or C+E matters more than age alone. Drivers under 25 or with under two years on the licence are typically rated higher.
Use of Vehicle Own goods, hire and reward, and haulage are three different use classes. Declaring the wrong one is the most common cause of a claim being challenged.
Annual Mileage An Actros on nightly trunk routes may cover four times the mileage of an Econic on municipal collection. If you can honestly declare lower annual mileage you will usually get a cheaper quote, but never understate it, because an insurer can refuse a claim where actual mileage is far above what was declared.
Geographic Cover UK-only cover is typically rated lower than European cover. Operators running continental work on the Actros need the wider territorial limit written in from the start.
Claims History Frequency tends to matter more than severity. Several small kerbside knocks on an Econic can affect renewal more than one larger highway claim.
Overnight Location A secured depot with barriers and CCTV is typically rated lower than roadside or unfenced yard parking. This is one of the few factors an operator can change quickly.
Body Type and Conversions On an Arocs, the mixer barrel or tipping body can be worth more than the chassis. Conversions need declaring separately or they may not be covered at their real value.
Security and Tracking Telematics and immobilisers can bring premiums down, and some underwriters now require tracking as a condition on higher value units.
Voluntary Excess Taking a higher excess typically brings the premium down. On a construction Arocs with a high claims frequency the maths often works against you, since you pay the larger excess more often than the saving is worth.
Fleet Size Operating two or more vehicles usually makes commercial HGV fleet insurance more cost-effective than stacking individual policies.

Because those factors interact, two operators running identical Actros units can receive very different quotes. Comparing across commercial truck insurance providers rather than renewing with the incumbent is usually where the difference shows up.

Eamonn’s Take

The Mercedes badge covers two very different underwriting conversations. An Arocs on site work almost always rates higher than an Actros on motorway trunking, even at similar weights, because construction sites produce frequent low-value damage that highway miles do not. The eActros adds a third problem: the battery pack is a large share of total value, so what looks like a moderate front-end impact can push a unit toward a total loss much faster than the diesel equivalent. Fewer underwriters will quote on it, which makes comparison matter more. Operators running mixed Mercedes fleets tend to do better wrapping them into commercial HGV fleet insurance than holding separate single-vehicle policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no single price, because the range spans a 6.5 tonne Atego and a 44 tonne Actros. Premiums are built from weight class, driver experience, use class, mileage and where the vehicle is kept overnight. Comparing quotes through a specialist broker panel is the practical way to see what your own profile attracts.

An Atego up to 7,500kg gross weight requires a C1 licence. Above 7,500kg you need a full Category C licence, and a C+E if you are pulling a drawbar trailer. No Mercedes truck in the current range can be driven on a standard car licence alone, since the Atego starts above the 3,500kg Category B limit.

Hire and reward is a standard use class that specialist brokers in our panel can quote on. It applies whenever you are carrying goods belonging to someone else for payment. Getting this right matters, because declaring own goods when you are operating hire and reward can put a claim at risk.

Specialist brokers in our panel may quote on the eActros, though the market is narrower than for diesel. Underwriters will want to know how the battery is valued, where the vehicle charges, and whether depot charging equipment is insured elsewhere. Comparison is worth more here than on a conventional unit, simply because fewer insurers participate.

Axor, Antos and earlier Actros units can typically be covered, usually on a market value basis rather than agreed value. Underwriters will look at parts availability, repair cost and whether the vehicle is still in regular commercial use. Older does not automatically mean higher, since lower vehicle value can offset the age loading.

From two vehicles upward, a fleet policy is usually more cost-effective than separate single-vehicle policies, and it lets the fleet be rated as a whole rather than by individual unit. Mixed fleets combining Atego, Actros and Arocs can normally sit under one policy.

Not always. Third party only is the legal minimum and covers damage you cause to others, but nothing on your own vehicle. Insurers often price it higher than you would expect, because operators choosing minimum cover tend to be rated as higher risk. On a newer Actros or Arocs, comprehensive is frequently the better value of the two.
